DETAILS
This panorama, taken by James Blakeway, captures the Atlanta Falcons playing for a win at the Georgia Dome. On June 30, 1965, one of the most significant days in Atlanta's sports history, the National Football League awarded its 15th franchise to the city. Excited fans showed their enthusiasm by purchasing 45,000 season tickets in a brief 54-day period with almost no promotion; an NFL record for a new team. "Falcons" was suggested by many, with reasons from a school teacher from Griffin, Georgia, singled out. Miss Julia Elliott said, "The Falcon is proud and dignified, with great courage and fight. It never drops its prey. It is deadly and has a great sporting tradition."
